Day 1: Engine ordered

Having had the vague itch to build a Seven for some time, this article on the GKD Legend pushed me over the edge. Six cylinder BMW power in a 600 kg car? Do want. After surprisingly little convincing, Emily agreed and even got quite keen on the idea.

Spec was a simple decision: the biggest engine my budget can afford is the E36 328, so that's what I'm getting.

So we've ordered an engine, gearbox and assorted oily bits. 2.8 litre straight six, should be good for 200 bhp. That ought to be enough to start with. Bit nervous about handing over £900 to some random on Ebay, but hopefully he won't disappear with my money. Hoping for delivery soon after Christmas.

Next tasks: clear out the garage (anyone want a dining table?), and buy an engine crane so we can move it around, and maybe some other assorted tools. Hopefully the portable electric heater is up to the job of making the garage bearable in the prevailing artic conditions. Also: speak to GKD and put an order in for a chassis.

Just want to get started now, but can't really do much until bits start arriving.

  1. "After surprisingly little convincing" being the mere utterence of "I would quite like to build a seven", followed by some reasonable answers questions about finance and other "what if"s.

Secretly I have been wanting to build a kit car since I was about 14, and have even suggested it to Dave in the past (but clearly he forgot!).

  2. I remember that - something about butchering a perfectly serviceable Lotus

  3. Well, you showed me what to do when removing an engine from the van, so I should be able to jack it up safely at least :-)

  4. 'oily bits' - is that technical auto talk? Because if not you're both in for a ride....hahahaha!
